Can humans and nature coexist in an urban landscape? Marais Wiels is a place where biodiversity accidentally started to develop.
The place used to be a beer brewery. Later, the ground was taken over by a construction company wanting to build apartments. Because of the financial crisis in 2008, they put construction on hold having only installed the foundations, hoping to build the rest later. Due to this postponement, the groundwater rose and created marshland which provided the perfect conditions for biodiversity to flourish.
The government doesn’t want to acknowledge it as a natural habitat that is meant to be preserved and thus not built upon. People are fighting back to sustain this green place that is rare, fragile, and of interest to the urban area. Where nature must adapt, it fights back against the urban landscape.
